Roy Keane on shortlist of 'five to 10' candidates for manager's job, says Celtic chief

Peter Lawwell says the Corkman is just one of a number of potential new coaches.

ROY KEANE IS on a shortlist of up to 10 candidates for the Celtic job, according to the club’s chief executive.

Roy Keane was thought to be on the brink of leaving his position as Ireland assistant manager to succeed Neil Lennon.

Martin O’Neill took yesterday’s Lansdowne Road press conference in Keane’s place when bookies made the Corkman the favourite for the Parkhead job.

The Ireland manager admitted that Dermot Desmond had contacted him to enquire about Keane’s availability.

But Peter Lawwell said this morning that Keane is just one of a number of potential new managers the Scottish champions are looking at.

“We are looking at a number of exceptional candidates and we’re going through a process. Hopefully it won’t take too long but I’m sure you’ll understnad there’s not too much more we can say,” he told STVsport.

“Clearly we want to do it as soon as we possibly can but these things you can’t put a time on it you ust have to do your work properly and hopefully we’ll get it done as soon as we can.

“As soon as we do that we will let our supporters know. You don’t want to get it wrong by going too fast, you need to take your time and make sure you get the right guy.”

Asked what makes Keane an ideal candidate, Lawwell said: “Well Roy’s played here, he’s a Celtic supporter, he’s a first-class guy like the others, there’s a lot of great candidates and we’ll just wait and see.”
