'Outstanding' Ireland youngster Manning hailed by QPR boss Holloway after making debut

The former Mervue United and Galway youth started for the Championship club in yesterday’s victory.

QUEENS PARK RANGERS boss Ian Holloway has heaped praise upon Ryan Manning after the Ireland youth international made his long-awaited debut for the club.

Manning, who joined QPR from Galway United in 2015, was handed his first-ever start for the Championship side in their away win over Wolverhampton Wanderers and his manager was impressed by the 20-year-old’s performance.

“I think Ryan Manning was absolutely outstanding and epitomised what my QPR was before and what I want it to be in the future,” Holloway said after bringing an end to a losing streak that had stretched to six games.

Manning began his career at Mervue United, making his breakthrough as a teenager in 2013 with nine goals in 28 league appearances. He joined Galway United in 2014 and was instrumental in their promotion to the Premier Division, scoring twice in the play-offs against UCD.

A regular for the Ireland at U17 and U19 level, Manning joined QPR in January 2015, with then-manager Harry Redknapp revealing that they had beaten a number of Premier League clubs in securing his services.

Elsewhere in the Championship, perennial Ireland contender Conor Hourihane continues to impress for Barnsley, providing his 11th assist of the season in their New Year’s Eve encounter with Birmingham City.

The Cork native, who has also scored four league goals this season, teed up Sam Winnall to put Barnsley 2-0 up at Oakwell. However, Birmingham fought back to clinch a draw, with Martin O’Neill target Lukas Jutkiewicz scoring the equaliser from the penalty spot.
