GARDAÍ ARE INVESTIGATING a fire that broke out in a church belonging to a religious order in Dublin this morning.

Part of the Salesian House on St Theresa’s Road in Crumlin went on fire at about 5.30am, the Dublin Fire Brigade (DFB) said.

Speaking to TheJournal.ie, Fr Pat Egan of the Salesians said that they were alerted by the fire alarm in the main building this morning. The blaze broke out in a small church, built in the 1950s, which was at the back of the main house.

Fr Pat said the door was locked which meant that the fire was contained. However, the entire church was gutted. “Even the marble altar disintegrated,” said Fr Pat.

DFB sent four pumps and a senior officer to the scene. The fire was contained and prevented from spreading onto other buildings.

In the meantime, those living in Salesian House went to the Red Cow while the fire was being fought. Fr Pat said they are “very grateful for the kindness people showed us”.
