Date for same-sex marriage referendum set for 22 May

He said he hopes support for same sex marriage stands up come polling day.

TAOISEACH ENDA KENNY says he expects the same sex marriage referendum to take place on 22 May.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Prime Time last night, he said said he hopes “it goes through”.

Respect and understanding

“It is about tolerance and respect and understanding and sensitivity.”

He said it will be put clearly to the people and sets out an “image of a very tolerant and inclusive Ireland”.

Kenny said he supports it “very strongly” and said he hopes support holds up.

He added that the majority of Oireachtas members supported legalising same-sex marriage
