Seamus Hickey: 'Just being able to run again is a massive psychological boost'

The Limerick hurler is battling back after tearing his cruciate against Clare in August.

LIMERICK HURLER SEAMUS Hickey admits it is ‘a massive psychological boost’ to be able to run again as he battles back from tearing his cruciate ligament in last August’s All-Ireland hurling semi-final.

Hickey suffered the injury in the early stages of the clash against Clare in Croke Park and was stretchered off as a result.

He was operated on at the Sports Surgery Clinic in Santry five weeks after that game and as the focus turned to 2014, he’s delighted to be back jogging as his right knee continues to improve.

“I’m in as good a place as I can be. I’m doing all my rehab and I’m about 12 weeks on from my operation now. I’m doing some light jogging and lots of gym work. Just even being able to run again at this stage is a massive psychological boost.

“I’m only doing runs of 1km or 2km. But it’s really good now. I’m looking forward to pushing it on over Christmas now. The break that most people have over that period, I’m going to use that to really push on my rehab.”

Hickey had never previously had problems with his knee and significant swelling did delay his operation taking place. He is targeting a comeback towards the end of Limerick’s league campaign next spring before their championship season commences but cannot pinpoint an exact date yet.

“There was a significant amount of swelling before I ruptured it. I had to do a good bit of strength work before I went in the surgery in Santry when Ray Moran operated on me.

“I’d never had problems with my knee before. I’d have heard of it happening to many people before, suffering a serious no contact injury. Unfortunately it’s become more prevalent in the GAA and it happened to me.

“But I’m getting there and looking forward to getting back next year. I’m looking to be back towards the end of the league but it’s not possible to say when for definite yet.”
