World Championships: McComb, Moylette win in very different fashions

Two more Irish fighters are through to the next round of the World Boxing Championships in Kazakhstan.

SEAN MCCOMB LEFT his opponent on the floor as he continued Ireland’s winning start at the World Boxing Championships in Kazakhstan.

The Belfast lightweight scored a first-round knockdown in a unanimous win against Almog Briga of Israel this morning.

McComb’s right hand set the tone for a 30-27, 30-27, 30-26 win on the judges’ cards and he now meets Gildas Bangana of the Central African Republic on Sunday.

In the light-welterweight division, Mayo’s Ray Moylette had to dig deep to beat Alexandros Tsanikidis on a split decision.

Although the Philippine judge scored the fight 30-27 in Tsanikidis’ favour, the others scored it 29-28 to Moylette who impressed in the final two rounds.

“It’s not one of the prettiest of wins, but a win is a win at the end of the day and we have something to build on,” he said afterwards.

Moylette meet Ermek Sakenov of Kyrgystan in the last 32 on Friday.

Adam Nolan is the only Irish fighter in the ring tomorrow. The Bray welterweight takes on France’s Souleymane Cissokho from 10.30am Irish time.
