FIXED CHARGE NOTICES are being introduced for cyclists who commit certain road traffic offences.

The fixed charge, set at €40, came into effect today.

The months of May to September are the most dangerous for cyclist injuries and fatalities.

Last year 13 cyclists died on Irish roads, so far this year three cyclists have lost their lives.

Announcing the new system, Minister for Transport Paschal Donohoe said:

As a committed cyclist myself, I am of the view that the introduction of fixed charge notices for cyclists will increase awareness among cyclists and reinforce the message that cyclists have a responsibility in relation to obeying road traffic law.
