'Flattering and borderline embarrassing' - Shane O'Donnell on new-found fame

The Banner’s hat-trick hero appeared on the Late Late Show with Patrick Donnellan and Davy Fitzgerald.

CLARE’S TEENAGE SCORING sensation Shane O’Donnell, despite Sinead O’Connor’s Miley Cyrus-related chat, was the star of the Late Late Show.

The 19-year-old, who notched a hat-trick in the All-Ireland final replay win over Cork, was accompanied by Patrick Donnellan and Banner boss Davy Fitzgerald on the chat show.

While Davy Fitz spoke about keeping a firm grip on the Liam MacCarthy trophy since last Sunday’s 5-16 to 3-16 win, host Ryan Tubridy was eager to grill O’Donnell on his new-found fame. The young forward, who started the replay in place of Darach Honan, was mobbed by fans at Clare’s homecoming and at the GOAL Challenge.

He reflected, “It’s flattering and borderline embarrassing at some stages.” O’Donnell added that being the object of affection for legions of female hurling fans was enjoyable but his team’s All-Ireland success will be the lasting memory.

“It’ll be winning the Liam MacCarthy with your best friends on a Saturday that you’ll remember,” he said.

O’Donnell, who scored 3-3 at Croke Park, was modest when asked about his goal-scoring impact against the Rebels. He commented, “I can’t score points, like, so I kind of just go for goals.”
