Sigerson Cup: Triumphs for UCD, DCU and St Mary's

There was glory for two Dublin colleges in the Sigerson Cup today and a Belfast-based one.

UCD 2-11
Trinity College 1-5

UCD powered clear in the second-half to claim victory over Trinity College in the Sigerson Cup in Belfield tonight.

UCD aided their cause with a competitive first-half performance against the wind as they were level at the interval, 0-6 to 1-3.

Mayo’s Kevin McLoughlin was at the heart of their best work while Niall Murray and Niall Kilroy also showed up well in attack.

Trinity College battled hard with Dublin’s Sean Murray and Meath’s Donal Keoghan anchoring their defence superbly in the first-half.

And Trinity, competing for the first time in the Sigerson Cup since 2005, got a huge boost in the 12th minute when Darragh Daly drove a shot to the bottom corner of the net.

UCD battled back to force parity at the interval and began the second-half in a strong fashion when Paul Cahillane tucked home a shot for their first goal after a long ball evaded the Trinity College rearguard.

And UCD’s position was embellished further minutes later when another Laois man found the net as Donie Kingston unleashed a thumping left-foot drive to the roof of the net.

UCD remained in control from there until the finish and they will now face a quarter-final against the winners of next week’s game between DCU and Queen’s University.
