Ever been to the Smithwick’s Experience? Lonely Planet thinks you should go

It has been named as one of the best new tourist attractions.

IF YOU’RE LOOKING to visit a world-class tourist destination this year, you might not have to travel very far.

Lonely Planet has named the Smithwicks Experience in Kilkenny as one of 2015′s best new attractions, coming in at number four.

It fended off competition from Icelandic ice caves and the Hong Kong Observation Wheel.

Top of the list was the recently opened One World Observatory in New York.

Located in a Victorian brewing building, the Smithwicks Experience gives visitors a ‘multi-sensory and interactive experience’ of what life has been like at the St Frances Abbey Brewery over the past 300 years, and a little lesson in the ale’s history.

The Lonely Planet writer seemed particularly wowed by a mix of actors playing Franciscan monks, and holograms.

“Visitors will have the opportunity to experience every aspect of the brewing process, culminating (of course) with a tasting – or two – of that perfect pint of ale,” Josephine Quintero added.

The €3.5 million attraction opened in summer 2014.
