Sony delays the Playstation 4's launch in China

The console was originally due to launch on 11 January, but has been delayed because of ‘various factors.’

SONY IS DELAYING the release of the Playstation 4 in China without specifying why.

Both the console and its handheld equivalent, the PS Vita, were supposed to be launched on 11 January, but has been delayed because of ‘various factors,’ the company said in a statement.

company source told Reuters that extended negotiations between Sony and Chinese authorities was part of the reason for the delay.

Sony didn’t say when it would start selling the consoles in the country, saying it would be announced at a later date.

China lifted a 14-year old ban on foreign consoles last year, paving the way for the PS4, Xbox One and Wii U to arrive in the country.

While it’s a large market for consoles, the country’s population is 1.37 billion,  China imposes strict control over the type of content that’s allowed.

When it announced the move, Sony said that the console would be produced through two joint ventures, one for hardware and one to handle software and services.

The Xbox One is already available in the country, having arrived back in September, but it also faced delays while it awaited government approval of its games.

When both devices are launched, the PS4 and PS Vita are expected to cost ¥2,899 (€394) and ¥1,299 (€177) respectively.
