South African Olympian Stander killed in road accident

The 25-year-old was UCI Mountain Bike World Cup under-23 men’s cross-country 2009 world champion.

CHAMPION MOUNTAIN BIKER Burry Stander died on Thursday after being run over by a minibus in a road accident, representatives said.

In a statement on his professional Facebook page sponsors said Stander had been hit while training on the KwaZulu-Natal coast.

“We are truly saddened to have to confirm that Burry Stander has passed away,” the statement read.

25-year-old Stander was UCI Mountain Bike World Cup under-23 men’s cross-country 2009 world champion and had finished fifth at the London Olympics.

Bicycling SA described him as a “true mountain biking legend.”

Local media reported that he was killed by a minibus taxi in a hit-and-run incident.
