Médecins Sans Frontiéres says that thousands of refugees are at risk of dying from illnesses that are entirely preventable.

THE HUMANITARIAN CRISIS in South Sudan is continuing with Médecins Sans Frontiéres (Doctors Without Borders) saying that thousands of refugees are at risk of dying from preventable diseases.

Refugees at the Jamam camp are particularly at risk due to the area’s susceptibility to flooding with dehydration, malnutrition, and other preventable illnesses providing the main threat to the health and well being of many based in the camp.

MSF has called for greater support for humanitarian relief efforts in the region where there has been a huge influx of refugees from the Blue Nile State, meaning Jamam and other camps have become overcrowded.

“A humanitarian crisis is unfolding.  And, unless the situation in the refugee camps can be improved in the immediate future, we will witness more and more preventable deaths over the coming weeks,” the head of MSF’s Ireland office Jane-Ann McKenna said recently.

These are a selection of images taken earlier this year by MSF workers in South Sudan:
