The League of Ireland's newest club were given a harsh footballing lesson tonight

It was a tough night at the office for Cabinteely.

DANNY FURLONG SCORED five times as Wexford Youths dismantled Cabinteely in the SSE Airtricity League First Division tonight with a 7-0 win.

The hosts, who remain second in the table, were in clinical form as the League of Ireland’s newest club were given the harshest of lessons at Ferrycarrig Park.

Furlong took his tally for the season to seven with a first-half hat-trick and then added a fourth shortly after the interval. Aidan Keenan got in on the act before Furlong hit the net again and Dean Broaders added further gloss to the scoreline from the spot in the closing stages.

Eddie Gormley’s side have suffered five defeats in their first eight games in the league and only Waterford United are below them in the standings.

Elsewhere, there were 1-0 wins for Athlone and league leaders Finn Harps while UCD and Cobh Ramblers played out a 1-1 draw in Belfield.

Tonight’s results:

  • Finn Harps 1-0 Shelbourne
  • Wexford Youths 7-0 Cabinteely
  • Athlone Town 1-0 Waterford United
  • UCD 1-1 Cobh Ramblers
