Do you agree with our SSE Airtricity League Team of the Week?

Here’s our pick of the Premier Division players from the midweek round of games.

Goalkeeper

Gary Rogers (Dundalk) – The veteran goalkeeper was safe as houses last night and played a big part in the champions coming away with another clean sheet. Bohemians piled on the pressure in the first half and again after the red card but any time they managed to get through Dundalk’s back four, Rogers was there to keep them out.

Defence

Alan Bennett (Cork City) – A second straight nod in Team of the Week for Bennett. Headed home City’s winner just after the hour mark and picked up the man of the match award.

Stephen Walsh (Galway United) – Despite the number 7 on his back, Walsh was impeccable at centre-back and his performance deserved more. Was also a threat at attacking set-pieces.

Sean Hoare (St Pat’s) – Derry’s attack in Inchicore was pretty poor but Hoare and defensive partner Kenny Browne formed a red wall that repelled any serious danger.

Sean Hoare and Anthony Elding: one of them made Team of the Week, one did not.

Lorcan Fitzgerald (Bohemians) – The full back was one of Keith Long’s new signings when he took the reins at Dalymount Park and looks like he could play a big part for Bohemians this season. He was tenacious in his defending last night and his expert set-piece taking created a lot of problems for Dundalk at the back.

Midfield

Billy Dennehy (Cork City) – Two more assists for Dennehy who is consistently carving out opportunities for his City team-mates.

Sean Russell (Limerick) – The winger was a constant menace up against Mick Daly, who struggled to handle the youngster’s pace and trickery. Russell tested the Drogheda goalkeeper on several occasions and was Limerick’s most likely as they sought to wrap up the points.

Liam Miller (Cork City) – Bennett may have scooped the ‘official’ gong, but Liam Miller in the Cork City midfield was the standout performer. His calm assurance on the ball allowed them to remain patient when things weren’t going their way and he showed that the absence of Colin Healy need not be an impediment.

Sean Thornton (Drogheda United) - The spotlight has been on Drogheda’s returning hero ever since he signed in the close season but he hasn’t disappointed in his displays thus far. Thornton was again a driving force in midfield for Drogheda. He has real quality on the ball and sticks a foot in when required.

Chris Forrester (St Pat’s) – His usual threatening self on the ball but showed a slightly different side to his game on Tuesday night as he led Pat’s pressing game with tireless running.

Forrester put himself about in midfield against Derry.

Forwards

Mikey Drennan (Shamrock Rovers) – The striker took a while to get going in the game but caused problems for the Sligo defence and did eventually score the winning goal.
