IT’S A SAGA that has been ongoing for years – should women golfers be allowed to be members of one of Scotland’s most prestigious golf clubs, St Andrews.
While Scottish voters take to the polls on their independence today, the other historic decision is being made on whether the rules should be changed after 260 years.
By the end of the day, it is expected that the Royal and Ancient Golf Club will pass a motion allowing female membership at the club.
Male members
The Guardian reports that the golf club’s general committee wrote a letter to its 2,400 male contingent and said “now is the time to welcome females” into the club.
It certainly has been a long fight, with the two opposing sides butting heads on the issue on a number of occasions, with the staunch traditionalists arguing that the club’s traditions should not be changed, while others argued that other golf clubs, such as the Augusta National, changed its ways, and so should St Andrews.
The decision comes down to a simple ballot, with the result to be announced at 6pm this evening.
Dare we ask? What do you think? If you had a vote, what would you decide?
