Diamond's late gem secures dramatic Dublin SFC title for St Vincent's

A Dean Rock penalty had Ballymun Kickhams in the ascendancy at half-time but there was late drama and a couple of red cards.

St Vincent’s 1-9

Ballymun Kickhams 1-8

CAMERON DIAMOND WAS the hero as he shot over the match-winning point for St Vincent’s in a pulsating Dublin senior football final replay against Ballymun Kickhams tonight at Parnell Park.

Dublin stars Diarmuid Connolly (St Vincent’s) and Philly McMahon (Ballymun Kickhams) were both sent-off with nine minutes remaining after an altercation between the pair.

But the honours ultimately went to St Vincent’s as they won the title for the first time since 2007. Just like last Sunday’s drawn game, they showed their battling qualities to come from behind to dethrone reigning champions Ballymun Kickhams.

Trailing by three points at half-time and again by the same margin at the three-quarter mark, St Vincent’s displayed the determination to peg back their opponents.

They strung together four unanswered points in the finale with top scorer Tomas Quinn firing over a brace before substitute Kevin Golden curled over a free to tie the teams at 1-8 apiece with five minutes remaining. Diamond then came up from defence to fire over the golden score with three minutes left as St Vincent’s protected that lead until the finish.

Dean Rock inspired Ballymun Kickhams to lead by 1-5 to 1-2 at the interval. He fired a penalty to the net in the opening minutes after Ted Furman was fouled and struck 1-4 during the first-half.

St Vincent’s kept in touch with Ciaran Dorney palming the ball to the net after good work by Quinn in the 16th minute. And they finished the game stronger to advance to the Leinster championship where they will face Westmeath’s St Loman’s next Sunday in Mullingar.

Scorers for St Vincent’s: Tomas Quinn 0-5 (0-4f), Ciaran Dorney 1-0, Diarmuid Connolly 0-2, Kevin Golden (0-1f), Cameron Diamond 0-1 each.

Scorers for Ballymun Kickhams: Dean Rock 1-5 (1-0 pen, 0-4f), Derek Byrne, Ted Furman, Liam O’Donovan 0-1 each.
