The Meaning of Life

Watch Gay Byrne react to Stephen Fry's scathing response to question about God

Everything about this is amazing.

STEPHEN FRY IS the next celebrity lined up for Gay Byrne’s The Meaning of Life series, which explores a subject’s relationship with religion and spirituality.

In this preview clip, Gay asks atheist Stephen what he would do if he was hypothetically wrong in his beliefs and he was confronted by God at the pearly gates. What would he say to him?

I’d say, bone cancer in children? What’s that about? How dare you. How dare you create a world in which there’s such misery that is not our fault. It’s not right. It’s utterly, utterly evil. Why should I respect a mean-minded, stupid God who creates a world so full of injustice and pain?

When Gay asks if he thinks that will get him into heaven, he bites back, “I wouldn’t want to get in on his terms. They’re wrong”.

He reply is as scathing as it is brilliant, but Gay wasn’t exactly feeling his descriptions of God as ‘selfish’ and a ‘maniac’.
