Summer in Ireland: expectation vs reality

Bring your umbrellas, lads.

AS THE OLD joke goes: How do you know it’s summer in Ireland?

Because the rain gets warmer. (Har, har, we know.)

That said, there are definitely some great things about the summer months here in the little country that needs a roof on it. 99s, feeling the sand beneath your toes squashing as you bring the dog for a swim, spotting Dads in their sandals and socks…

But do our expectations always live up to the reality? Hmm…

1. The weather

Expectation: “Ah, the glorious summer sunshine.”

Reality: “Oh.”

2. Your BBQ

Expectation: “Hmm… Imagine the delicious-smelling food drifting over into our neighbour’s garden, making them SO jealous…”

Reality: “Wonder if the neighbours have a fire extinguisher handy?”

3. Summer holidays

Expectation: “Bliss. Nothing but zoning out and relaxing for a while week.”

Reality: “Boooooored.”

4. The kids being off

Expectation: “Ah, it’ll be great to have some quality time with the little chizzlers.”

Reality: “WHAT DATE ARE THEY BACK AGAIN?”

5. Your wardrobe

Expectation: “This year, I am going to be a gorgeous, bronzed summer goddess.”

Reality: “How do you get fake tan off your palms?”

Ah, we’re only messing. The Irish summer’s not so bad… Right?
