ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER blow to Arsene Wenger’s dreams of leading the Gunners to a creditable Premier League title challenge.
Today the Frenchman is contemplating the loss of influential centre-back Thomas Vermaelen, who has been forced to undergo corrective surgery on his left ankle.
The Belgian missed eight months of last season after enduring a frustrating series of injuries to his right achilles tendon.
According to the Daily Mail, this most recent setback, thought to have stemmed from an inury the defender sustained during Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Udinese in the Champions League last month, looks set to keep Vermaelen out of action for a minimum of three months, scuppering whatever hopes the club had of encouraging him to develop a reliable partnership with new signing Per Mertesacker.
The news comes mere days after it was annouced that the side’s talented young midfielder, Jack Wilshere, would be forced to spend somewhere between two and three months recovering from an injury he picked up during Arsenal’s troubled pre-season campaign.
