Swimming: Murphy to take on the world alone

Dublin’s Barry Murphy goes in the first of his four events at the World Short Course Swimming Championships this morning.

BARRY MURPHY IS flying solo at the World Short Course Swimming Championships in Turkey this week.

Murphy, Ireland’s only representative, goes in the men’s 100m breaststroke on day one in Istanbul.

The heats begin at 9.19am this morning Irish time.

Murphy’s main target is likely to be the 50m breaststroke which starts on Saturday. The Dubliner, 27, had his best-ever finish at the European SC Championships in Chartres last month when he qualified for the final and placed sixth overall, setting a new national record of 26.60.

Currently ranked world number 21 in the event, he will need to show that form and more if he is to book a place in Sunday’s final at the Sinan Erdem Arena.

Murphy also competes in the 50m freestyle (Thursday) and the 50m butterfly (Friday).
