1. #NOTW: News International’s James Murdoch has announced that the News of the World is to close. It will publish its very last edition on Sunday which, it seems, won’t carry any advertising at all – a decision made by News International itself, according to Brand Republic.
2. #TRAGEDY: One person has been killed, ten hospitalised and three treated for minor injuries at a Dutch stadium when part of its roof collapsed. The roof at the football venue in the city of Enschede collapsed during off-season construction work.
3. #WAGES: A High Court ruling has deemed the Joint Labour Committee system of setting rates for low-paid workers to be “unconstitutional” – a decision which has brought joy for certain employers and devastation for those on a low wage.
4. #NO HOUSE CALLS: A complete block has been put in place on premium rate phone calls being made from any phone in Leinster House. The Committee on Procedure and Privileges said that the decision was in response to the votes placed for Michael Healy-Rae in the Celebrities Go Wild TV show.
5. #DOWN AND OUT: Two high-profile withdrawals in politics today: Former MEP Avril Doyle has taken herself out of the race for the Presidency and, separately, the Fine Gael whip has been withdrawn from TD Denis Naughten after he voted against the Government in last night’s decision on downgrading Roscommon hospital.
