GOOD EVENING

The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EACH WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie bring you five stories you really should check out by 5pm.

1. #RIOTS: David Cameron has recalled the House of Commons to debate the riots that have ravaged London, and other major English cities – and insisted that troublemakers will feel “the full force of law”. 16,000 police will be deployed on London’s streets tonight, with all leave cancelled.

Hundreds have been arrested in connection with the disturbances – but while Twitter-organised clean-up operations gather steam, London’s mayor Boris Johnson, returning from holiday, was heckled as he tried to join in with his broom.

2. #MARKETS: It seems an end is in sight to the world’s stock market chaos. European markets have made some gains today – with Dublin, London and Paris all closing up, though Madrid and Milan lost ground while Frankfurt was trading in negative territory. In the US, the Dow Jones, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq are all recording gains today.

3. #AIR CRASH: A man in his 40s is in a serious condition in Waterford Regional Hospital after a tw0-passenger light aircraft crashed in Co Tipperary. Another man, in his 50s, sustained minor injuries.

4. #PENSIONS LEVY: Government documents released under the Freedom of Information Act have revealed a split between the government parties over the private sector pensions levy. Joan Burton wrote to Michael Noonan expressing concerns that the proposal would force some pension funds to be wound up – but Noonan ploughed ahead with the scheme regardless.

5. #BAAA: A Co Laois farmer has set a world record for… the world’s most valuable Suffolk sheep. His animal sold in Scotland for €108,000 – destroying the previous world record of €90,000. In his honour, we’ve been looking at some of the world’s priciest pets.
