TWO MEN HAVE been arrested after a fight broke out between Ireland and England supporters following Sunday’s international football friendly.
Around 12 fans – believed to be six from each side – were involved in the row which broke out after 4pm in Temple Bar on Sunday.
Two men, both Irish fans, were arrested under the Public Order Act and taken to Pearse Street Garda Station. It is believed they have since been released. No English fans were arrested.
Gardaí intervened quickly, due to a large-scale policing operation which was in place on the day, and broke up the fight which happened in the Essex Gate area.
There had been fears of widespread violence around the game, the first in Dublin since the two sides met in 1995. On that occasion, English hooligans forced the game to be abandoned after throwing seats and clashing with gardaí.
However, the Temple Bar incident was one of the more serious ones reported in what sources called “overall a quiet enough day”.
