Recovering

Terrier with cuts and bite marks found 'huddled and shaking' tied to tree

‘Buzz’ the Staffie was found at an estate in Portlaoise.

AN ANIMAL RESCUE group in Laois says a dog found injured and tied to a tree in a Portlaoise housing estate yesterday is slowly “recovering from his shock”.

The LSPCA said it received a call yesterday afternoon from a young woman who found the animal “in a terrible condition”.

“The dog had been hidden in bushes and was well hidden away from the public eye,” the group said, in a Facebook post.

An LSPCA volunteer was dispatched to the estate, to find the dog “huddled in the corner, shaking with fear as she approached him”.

“He was untied and bundled up in a towel and rushed to the vets.

He was immediately treated for shock, received anti-inflammatory and pain relief. He was also started on an antibiotic.

The injured animal – a Staffie – had lacerations all over his body, and bites “which could possibly be linked to dog baiting”.

In an update this evening, LSPCA volunteers said that ‘Buzz’ (he’s been christened since yesterday) had had “a relatively comfortable night”.

“He is receiving fluids and two sets of antibiotics, one of which is being given intravenously. He is also on strong painkillers to make him as comfortable as possible.”

The poor fellow also has an ulcer in his left eye, and bruising around his right.

“He also has a large swelling/bruising under his jaw, consistent with a bang or tugging. They are trying to keep him as comfortable as possible at the moment.”

On a brighter note:

Good news is this little boy LOVES his food and is eating like a horse, which is brilliant as he needs to regain his strength. All the poor boy is doing at the moment is sleeping and eating.

The LSPCA says it has reported the incident to Gardaí, and is appealing for anyone with information about the dog’s mistreatment to get in touch.
