GOOD EVENING

The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EVERY WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you five things you need to know before you head out the door…

1. #CATHOLIC CHURCH: Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore has said Cardinal Sean Brady should “not hold a position of authority” given his alleged failure to deal with allegations of abuse made against the paedophile priest Fr Brendan Smyth. Ruairí Quinn has also said Brady should consider his stance, given that the Church is the patron of 92 per cent of primary schools.

2. #JOBSWATCH: It’s been a decent day on the jobs front. SAP, Europe’s largest software provider, is expanding its Irish operations with 150 jobs in Dublin and another 100 in Galway. Separately, a new casino in Dublin will create 50 jobs. A report dealing with the self-employed, however, has noted that people who work for themselves are having growing problems with debt, accessing credit and paying off loans and mortgages

3. #INM: A single investor has bought over 5 per cent of Independent News & Media today, paying almost €10 million to do so. The move comes less than six weeks before the company AGM, which is expected to see a major tug-of-war between Denis O’Brien and the O’Reilly family for control of the company.

4. #FLU: Two residents at a County Roscommon nursing home have died from an outbreak of a seasonal influenza strain – the same one which claimed the lives of seven residents in a home in Donegal earlier this year. 42 of the 76 residents at Drumderrig House in Boyle have contracted the infection.

5.  #USE THE FORCE!: An influential Dáil committee is to be provided with statistics on the number of people who affirmed their religion as ‘Jedi Knight’ in last year’s Census. The stats will be sought after Fine Gael TD Eoghan Murphy asked the Public Accounts Committee if there was any way of knowing if people had lied on their Census forms.
