1. #PRISONS: Prison officers have said that criminal gangs are controlling prisons, and that officers are coming under an increasing number of attacks, RTÉ reports. Meanwhile, the Minister for Justice Alan Shatter said the Dáil would sit until late July to ensure the passage of new legislation aimed at tackling the numbers of prisoners in Ireland’s jails, the Irish Times adds.
2. #OSAMA: Photographs acquired by Reuters which were taken about an hour after the U.S. assault on Osama bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad in Pakistan show three dead men lying in pools of blood, but no weapons. None of the men look like Osama. Meanwhile, documents reportedly seized during the raid on Osama’s compound reveal that Al Qaeda was preparing an attack for the anniversary of 9/11.
3. #7/7: The coroner at the inquests into the 7/7 London bombings is due to publish her findings today, the BBC reports. The coroner is expected to issue recommendations on the way the emergency services dealt with the incident and to explore why M15 was aware of the presence in the UK of some of the bombers, but failed to prevent the attacks.
4. #OBAMA VISIT: Barack Obama is to address crowds at Dublin’s O’Connell street during his whistle-stop 24 hour trip to Ireland, it’s reported this morning.
5. #BETRAYED: The head of the European Central Bank, Jean Claude Trichet, has denied claims by former finance minister Brian Lenihan that the bank “betrayed” Ireland on the eve of the bailout, the Irish Times reveals.
6. #IMPALED: A Sligo man died from infection after becoming impaled through the groin on a fence in Paris, an inquest has heard.
7. #GHOST ESTATES: A group which will oversee action by local authorities on ghost estates is to be established shortly – some of the houses will be leased or purchased from NAMA for families on local authority waiting lists, Minister for Housing Willie Penrose has said.
8. #BANKERS: Matthew Elderfield has said he expects the bank boards to have been “refreshed” by the end of the year, but warns it will take years for banks to be properly regulated, RTÉ reports.
9. #BABY NAMES: A pregnant teenager is America’s most popular inspiration for baby names as the names Maci (for a girl) and Bentley (for a boy), made famous by the show Teen Mom, are the top trending names in the US, according to social security lists. Elvis fell off the list for the first time since 1954. It all makes Mariah Carey’s baby name choices look almost bland.
