GOOD MORNING

The 9 at 9 We hope you’re looking forward to the Bank Holiday weekend. But first, here’s nine things you should know by 9am today.

EVERY MORNING, TheJournal.ie brings you the nine things you need to know as you start your day.

1. #CARDINAL BRADY: One of Ireland’s most well-known theologians Fr Vincent Twomey has said that Cardinal Seán Brady should resign as Catholic Primate because he has lost his moral authority. The most recent focus on clerical abuse has seen more issues arise, including a pre-occupation with duty and a legalistic approach to abuse over humanity, the retired moral theology professor told RTÉ’s Prime Time.

2. #APPEAL: Gardaí in Mayo have issued a fresh appeal for information about the brutal murder of pensioner Eddie Fitzmaurice in Bellaghy 14 years ago. They believe there are people out there with knowledge of the crime and have asked them to come forward to help solve what was a “particularly callous” attack on a defenceless 83-year-old.

3. #SUSPICIOUS: Police in Northern Ireland are dealing with reports of a suspicious device on a railway line at Lurgan this morning. Dublin-Belfast Enterprise trains have been disrupted and Irish Rail have been forced to provide alternative bus services. Separately, Gardaí in Dublin have been called to Rialto after a suspicious device was found in a car on St James’s Walk. Defence Forces said the IED was viable and have removed it for technical examination.

4. #CONVICTIONS: New legislation to be published today will see people with minor convictions have their criminal records wiped if they don’t incur any new charges after a period of between three to seven years. Only those who spent less than a year in jail will qualify.

5. #DRINK DRIVING: A motorist who admitted to drinking seven pints and 10 bottles of Guinness, as well as eight other drinks of Aftershock, Vodka and Guinness before knocking down and killing a young student in Wexford in 2010 has been jailed for five years, the Irish Independent reports.

Meanwhile, Gardaí have issued a warning to drivers to reduce speed, never drink and drive and wear seatbelts over the next four days. Last May Bank Holiday weekend, four people were tragically killed and another nine seriously injured on Irish roads.

6. #BREAST IMPLANTS: Women in Ireland who received defective breast implants made from industrial silicone instead of medical-grade materials could have the cost of removal surgery covered by the original providers if the Irish Medicines Board’s efforts are successful, according to the Irish Independent.

7. #MEDIA MOGUL: Denis O’Brien went on a shopping spree (of sorts) yesterday, splashing out €9.63 million to increase his holding in Independent News & Media to 27 per cent, the Irish Times reports.

8. #SEX LINES: Dáil deputy Derek Keating has called for a ban on late-night ‘sex lines’ being advertised on Irish television channels. He claimed that the ads are “a front for other services” that should not be promoted.

9. #STONED: BBC headquarters was all sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll back in the day, according to a new documentary looking at the television centre in the 1960s and 1970s. Even the children’s television stars were at it as Play School presenters have admitted to smoking “the biggest joint you’ve ever seen” just before shooting a scene. And if that’s not enough scandal for you, another insider disclosed that staff were “bonking all over the place”. Oh my.
