The Daily Fix: Friday

Your essential news round-up of the day’s biggest stories, plus bits and pieces you may have missed along the way.

EVERY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you a round-up of all the day’s main news, as well as the bits and pieces that you may have missed along the way.

  • TheJournal.ie‘s coverage of the Mahon Report continued today as former TD and EU commissioner Pádraig Flynn “absolutely” rejected the tribunal’s findings about a £50,000 payment made to him by Tom Gilmartin.
  • Micheál Martin, as leader of Fianna Fáil, continued to handle the fallout from the report, holding a press conference this morning to discuss Bertie Ahern’s imminent expulsion, how the Good Friday Agreement cannot “absolve” the former leader, and his belief that political parties needed to “dramatically change” how politics is funded.
  • As the African Union ramps up efforts to hunt down Joseph Kony and his 500 loyal followers, Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore says he is “greatly concerned” that the violent rebel remains at large in Central Africa.
  • There was sad news today for an Irish family as the body of 27-year-old missing Irish man David Christian was found in Whistler, Canada.
  • The EU’s latest sanctions on Syria involve the women in President Bashar Assad’s life, including his wife, mother, sister and sister-in-law.
  • “If I had a son, he’d look like Travyon.” Those are the poignant – and very personal – words from US President Barack Obama as he promised to get to the bottom of what happened on the night that the black teenager was shot dead in Florida.
  • Two men have been arrested over the death of Ciarán O’Connell, the 22-year-old who died following a house party assault in Cavan on St Patrick’s Day.
  • The IDA tells multinationals they’ll be “in good company” if they invest in Ireland. They argue all these other points, as well.

  • If you’ve been missing BOD, Seán Farrell has all the details of his comeback over at TheScore.ie.
  • You’ve heard they found oil off the coast of Cork. Well, now they’ve discovered gas too.
  • It’s Friday and, by now, we hope you know what that means. Cute animals! And, more specifically, cute baby elephants!
  • Ireland had crocodiles back in the day. Weird, right?
  • A cannabis vending machine (!) has been seized by police in New Zealand. Seemingly, it was used as an inventive way to distribute the drug to clubbers.
  • Meanwhile, Russia is denying that it owns an unidentified space object that fell from the sky and into Siberia.
  • Finally, fans of The Simpsons may feel that the small glimpses we get of Itchy & Scratchy just aren’t enough. This compilation video offers 48 full minutes of the cat and mouse’s glorified violence. If that’s what you’re into:
