• The Independent TD Mick Wallace has left the Dáil Technical Group following a request from fellow independents to do so as his attempt to make a statement in the Dáil tomorrow over his tax affairs was denied by the Ceann Comhairle. There are now suggestions that he could face a censure but the government said this evening that nothing had been finalised.
• Changes to the penalty points system on Ireland’s roads could mean increased penalties for motorists who are caught speeding or using their mobile phone while driving.
• In Syria there was heavy shelling of the city of Homs today with the Arab League and UN envoy to the country Kofi Annan saying civilians were trapped in the area. This livestream shows the situation in the city right now with gunfire audible at regular intervals.
• One of the two hotel workers accused of murdering Michaela McAreavey in Mauritius last year has denied being in the room at the time of her killing. Sandip Moneea gave evidence to the court today.
• Justice Minister Alan Shatter has given the go ahead for a major redevelopment of Limerick Prison with both the A and B wings to be replaced with a modern 100-cell accommodation block.
• Two Irish men have been killed in separate accidents in Australia over the weekend. Gary Mealiff was killed in a road accident in Queensland while another man was killed when he fell into a machine at a quarry, also in Queensland.
• Sinn Féin’s Martin McGuinness has resigned his seat as an MP in Westminster parliament as the party announced a reorganisation of its Northern Irish representation in London, seeking to end the practice of ‘double-jobbing’.

• Speaking of which we’ve got the calculator out and had a look at the various permutations that could get Ireland into the quarter finals of Euro 2012 now we face the last two World Champions in our final group games.
• Despite the result the Croatia game saw a surge in electricity use across Ireland according to EirGrid which means it’s no surprise that the game attracted the highest RTÉ audience since the 1994 World Cup.
• Good idea? Belfast has received funding which could see it offer free public wireless internet to all its residents and visitors to the city but not before 2015.
• News of the proposed bailout of Spain’s troubled banking sector buoyed the markets this morning but as they day moved on things were looking less optimistic and now we’re asking if Cyprus is next for a bailout?

• A big week for the Leveson inquiry into media ethics in the UK this week as it hears from some well known political figures. Here’s what former Prime Minister Gordon Brown and current Chancellor George Osborne told the inquiry today.
