  • The independent TD Mick Wallace is under pressure tonight after it emerged that he under declared VAT owed to the Revenue Commissioners. Wallace has said he is unlikely to be able to pay the money as his Dáil Technical Group colleagues criticised him.
  • Unemployment has hit 14.8 per cent with 309,000 people now out of work and the number of long term unemployed rising to 8.9 per cent.
  • The cost of living has also risen by 1.8 per cent in the year to May according to new figures from the CSO today but the consumer price index did not change between April and last month.
  • UN observers were prevented from entering the site of a newly reported mass killing in Syria today as the UN and Arab League envoy to Syria Kofi Annan admitted that his peace plan is failing.
  • It was a tough day for the new secretary general of the Department of Finance in front of the Dáil’s Public Accounts Committee. John Moran faced question over his department’s €3.6bn accounting error with two reports into the error described as a “whitewash” by the committee chairman John McGuinness.
  • A witness in the Michaela McAreavey murder trial has provided an alibi for one of the two men accused of the Tyrone woman’s killing in Mauritius last year during evidence today. Govinden Saminaden told the court that his superior, Sandip Moneea, was with him when Michaela was killed.
  • Gardaí are investigating the gruesome discovery of two seals’ heads nailed to the gates of the Dingle Wildlife and Seal Sanctuary in Kerry.
  • In Spain, the cost of borrowing rose to around 6 per cent as it auctioned off 10-year government bonds at the sort of interest rate that could prove unsustainable for the financial troubled eurozone nation. In more bad news, the country’s credit rating was downgraded by Fitch tonight.

  • The Battersea Power Station, which is partly owned by NAMA, is to be sold to two Malaysian property companies for £400million, putting an end to the dreams of Chelsea FC of building a new stadium on the site which features on the sleeve cover of the Pink Floyd album ‘Animals’.
  • Gardaí have issued an appeal for the public’s assistance in identifying the body of a man which was recently recovered off the Cliffs of Moher in Co Clare.
  • The strange case of the cash in the curtains donated to the children’s charity Barnardos has been solved after the woman who donated the curtains came forward to claim the money.
  • Good news for cyclists after the Junior Transport Minister Alan Kelly announced €7 million of funding for new cycling projects across the country. Here’s what’s going to happen.
  • Music’s Jay Z and Kanye West have offered to do their bit for recession-hit Ireland as they cut prices for their Watch the Throne show at the O2 this Saturday night.
  • Euro 2012 gets under way tomorrow and were getting pretty excited here at TheJournal.ie HQ. Our colleagues at TheScore.ie have been hearing from captain Robbie Keane ahead of Ireland’s opening game against Croatia on Sunday. Meanwhile Irish fans have been urged not to use prostitutes while they’re in Poland.
  • Finally, and in the spirit of all that is great about Irish soccer, here’s a marvellous scene set during the Ireland v Romania penalty shoot out at Italia 90 from the hit movie ’The Van’. It was our finest hour but will there be another to remember in a couple of weeks?
