  • A group of housing activists and a TD managed to prevent the attempted eviction of a man from his home in Mountrath, Co Laois yesterday. Here’s the video.
  • Minister for Education Ruairí Quinn has rowed back on 235 of the planned legacy post cuts from DEIS primary schools. However, the minister also said that the reduction in overall capitation funding scheduled for next year is now being brought forward.
  • Online payment company PayPal has announced the creation of 1,000 new jobs in Dundalk.
  • A 23-year-old man has been charged in relation to the killing of 16-year-old Melanie McCarthy-McNamara in Tallaght on 7 February. The teenager was shot and fatally injured as she sat in a parked car on Brookview Way.
  • Three TDs are to introduce a Bill to the Dáil tomorrow which would legislate for limited access to abortion in the wake of the 1992 X case ruling. The Bill is due to be debated in April.

  • Former Mayor of Naas Darren Scully has lost the Fine Gael party whip following his controversial remarks about African immigrants last year. Earlier today, Scully told TheJournal.ie that he was “very disappointed” that the party had sanctioned him this way. He also said that he feels there has been a “witchhunt” against him.
  • A body has been recovered by divers in Melbourne during the search for a man believed to be an Irish tourist who got into difficulty in the Yarra River last night.
  • After successive rounds of terse negotiations, EU leaders have agreed a second bailout for Greece – worth €130 billion.
  • French police have questioned former IMF chief Dominique Strauss Kahn over an alleged prostitute ring.
  • Data captured by NASA’s Hubble has led to the identification of what astronomers say is a totally new type of planet.

  • This year’s Eurosong entrants have been released earlier than usual. From Jedward (yep, again) to Donna McCaul (yep, again), here are their videos. In today’s poll we asked if you thought Ireland should even put in for the Eurovision any more, and at the time of writing, 49 per cent said ‘yes’, while 47 per cent said ‘no’.
