Find out the latest on Arsenal’s search for a decent centre-back, which defender Liverpool are interested in and why Alex Ferguson is threatening to fine Anders Lindegaard.

FIRST OFF, WE start with news that Arsenal could sign a defender before the transfer window closes.

It appears, however, that ‘could’ won’t cut it with most Arsenal fans who were upset by the signing of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – seemingly for the crime of not being the ‘good old-fashioned British centre half’ that they so desperately desire.

Carlos Tevez (yes, him again) left training early, not because the Manchester weather was bothering him, but because there have apparently been developments in his potential move to Inter.

Rafael van der Vaart knows more than the rest of us it would seem, as he says he is sure Luka Modric will stay at Tottenham.

His Dutch international colleague, Wesley Sneijder, has hinted at his intentions in a less-than-cryptic fashion – by telling Van der Vaart, who has subsequently told everyone else that Sneijder wants to move to England. Not that it wasn’t already football’s worst-kept secret though.

Newly-established political commentator and some-time footballer, Joey Barton, may be staying with Newcastle after all.

In a shock deviation from normal order, Liverpool will look to avoid paying over the odds for a British player, as they bid £8m for Scott Dann.

Irish international Shane Long should wrap up his £7m move to West Brom at some stage during our lifetime hopefully.

And finally, Alex Ferguson has said he’ll fine new United goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard if he keeps a clean sheet against Scotland, jokingly of course. Right?

Ill-advised prospective deal of the day: Newcastle still need a striker after the departure of Andy Carroll in January. However, Roman Pavlyuchenko for £14m is not the answer, given that the striker only plays well when he’s bothered i.e. rarely.

Advised prospective deal of the day: £25m is a lot of money, but in today’s transfer market, Samir Nasri is worth every penny.
