HERE ARE THE things you need to know as we round off the day in three easy steps…

THINGS WE LEARNED

#LABOUR PAINS: Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has admitted his disappointment over Labour’s performance in the Dáil by-election in Meath East this week. He said the dramatic slump in support was “a bad result” for the party.

#SAVITA: The solicitor representing Praveen Halappanavar has received a copy of the HSE’s draft report into the death of Savita Halappanavar. The document will not be formally released until next week but it is understood about 30 people are named in the review.

#GOOD FRIDAY: There have been calls for Ireland’s ban on alcohol sales on Good Friday to be lifted with restaurateurs describing the legislation as “outdated, archaic and bad for business”.

#CYPRUS: The president of Cyprus has declared his country’s financial crisis “contained”, insisting the nation would not leave the eurozone. The announcement came as the central bank eased restrictions on domestic debit and credit card transactions in the hope of kickstarting spending.

#HIGH SPEED: Two men died in the early hours of this morning after the car they were travelling in crashed into a north London bridge during a police car chase. The driver was arrested and is being questioned in relation to dangerous driving causing death and possession of class A drugs.

#BAD NEWS: The Injured Jockey’s Fund has issued a statement this evening, confirming that rider JT McNamara suffered paralysis following a fall at Cheltenham earlier this month. It said the Limerick sportsman is making progress and is “in a very positive frame of mind”.
