Things we learned, loved and shared today…

HERE ARE THE things you need to know as we round off the day in three easy steps.

THINGS WE LEARNED

#LYING EYES: The Clare woman who was jailed in November 2008 for soliciting a man to kill her husband and his sons, Sharon ‘Lying Eyes’ Collins has been released from prison, we have learned today. TheJournal.ie has learned that she is on temporary release under certain conditions.

#DRUGS: The HSE has warned drug users in Cork to take caution over a brown powder substance known to contain MDMA and PMMA which may have been played a part in the death of two young men in Cork at the weekend. A fourth person has been arrested in connection with those deaths today.

#CROKE PARK: As the Fine Gael think-in concluded and the Labour Party one got underway this evening, Taoiseach Enda Kenny has restated the government’s commitment to the Croke Park Agreement. Kenny said he wanted to see the public sector deal “implemented in full”.

#MAGDALENE LAUNDRIES: The final report into the State’s involvement with the infamous Magdalene Laundries is to be finished by the end of the year, the government said today. The report has been delayed as the commission, chaired by Martin McAleese, continues to receive submissions from various parties.

#DU PLANTIER: The family of the French murder victim Sophie Toscan du Plantier are seeking to launch an appeal with the European Commission to bring Ireland to the European Court of Justice to have its extradition laws changed in order to advance the investigation into the murder in Cork 16 years ago.

#9/11: Today marks the 11th anniversary of the 11 September 2001 attacks on the United States with a low-key memorial held at the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington.

THINGS WE LOVED

  • We can’t help but admire this potentially ground-breaking innovation which turns iPhone images into real photos in a matter of moments. Check out this video which explains more about the Impossible Instant Lab.
  • As Club Orange got a hammering off Advertising Standards for THOSE TV ads, Twitter had some ideas for some non-boob-related ads.
  • As Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s joke at the Fine Gael think-in last night about a possible reshuffle for ministers who didn’t make it up Croagh Patrick caused some chatter, parliamentarians were quick to scramble up the hill today. Here’s photographic proof of their efforts:

THINGS WE SHARED

  • If  you’re in the market for a little pony and have one you want to get rid of then you might be interested in this cushion munching Shetland pony whose Wexford owner is ‘WILLING TO SWAP’.
  • Tomorrow will be a landmark day for the families and survivors of the Hillsborough disaster as an independent panel releases a report detailing just what happened that day. Last night ITV screened this heartbreaking and emotional documentary ‘The Search for Truth’ which is good primer for anyone who wants to learn more about the disaster in which 96 people died.
  • So Barack Obama has cultivated this image of being hip and down with the kids as well as being arguably the most powerful man on earth. But can he use an iPhone? Apparently not:
