The Morning Score: Bank Holiday Monday

It may be a bank holiday, but that doesn’t mean the world of sport stops turning. While you were having a lie-in, all this was hitting the back pages.

1. #REDS Less than a month after making his return from a six-month lay-off, Steven Gerrard has made an unscheduled return to the doctor’s surgery. The Liverpool captain developed a debilitating infection in his right ankle after sustaining a minor cut in training.

Quite how an injury so apparently innocuous was allowed to worsen to the point where the England international was later seen exiting a Merseyside hospital in a plaster cast is, at this point, anyone’s guess.

Not only will Gerrard’s injury again deprive Liverpool of his talismanic presence in midfield, it could also scupper what hopes the 31-year-old had of representing Fabio Capello’s side against Sweden and Spain later this month.

2. #VROOM After colliding for the sixth time this season during yesterday’s Indian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa have been ordered by their respective team directors to declare an end to hostilities.

Hamilton claims he attempted a reconciliation of sorts last week, but Massa thinks the Englishman’s efforts didn’t go far enough.

“No, he didn’t try. When I tried to speak to him he passed through. After the minute’s silence he just said ‘have a good race’.”

3. #SOCCERBALL The New York Red Bulls and LA Galaxy collided yesterday evening in the first leg of the MLS Western Conference semi-finals. With a handful of formerly illustrious Europeans trotting about the park– including Robbie Keane, David Beckham and Thierry Henry– it fell to Chicagoan Mike Magee to decide the game’s outcome.

His fifteenth-minute strike for the Galaxy means the Californians will take a one-nil aggregate lead into Thursday night’s second leg.

4. #WTA Petra Kvitova claimed the season-ending WTA Championships in Istanbul yesterday, bouncing back against Belarus’s Victoria Azarenka to claim a first prize of a little under £1million and second place in the latest world rankings.

Not too shabby.

5. #SLOGS The 2011 Dublin Marathon is currently underway, with approximately 14,000 people aiming to complete the least efficient journey from one side of Merrion Square to the other yet conceived.
