The Morning Score: Wednesday

Barcelona and Shakhtar advance to the Champions League quarter-finals, Irish cricketer is accused of dressing room damage, and GAA reject Friday Night Lights proposal.

1. #CHAMPIONS LEAGUE It was a disappointing night in Europe for Arsenal and their fans. Despite taking a single-goal lead to the Nou Camp last night, the Gunners were outpassed and outplayed by Messi and co. as Barcelona booked their place in the quarter-finals with a 3-1 win.

In the night’s other last 16 tie, Ukranian side Shakhtar Donetsk beat Roma 3-0, advancing 6-2 on aggregate.

Tonight, Spurs host Inter Milan at White Hart Lane, although Harry Redknapp doesn’t expect Gareth Bale to be fit enough to start. Schalke take on Valencia in the night’s other game.

Adrian will be here from about 7pm with a liveblog of the evening’s action.

2. #CRICKET CRIME Yesterday, we reported that six bats were stolen from Irish cricket hero Niall O’Brien following Sunday’s game against England in Bangalore.

In The Hindu today, a different angle of the story is reported with the paper claiming that O’Brien damaged the door of the visiting team’s dressing room following his dismissal.

3. #FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS Despite suggestions to the contrary yesterday, it appears that the GAA’s Central Competitions Control Committee (CCCC) has refused to sanction the rescheduling of Dublin’s forthcoming league fixture against Mayo for the evening of Friday March 18.

Peter Sweeney, GAA Correspondent with The Star, reported that the game would go ahead as scheduled on Sunday March 20th.

4. #FORE! The pairings for this weekend’s WGC-Cadillac Challenge have been announced, with organisers again deciding to group players according to their ranking for the first two rounds of play.

That means that golf fans will be treated to the mouthwatering threesomes of Kaymer/Westwood/Donald and Mickelson/Woods/McDowell when the tournament kicks off in Florida tomorrow.

5. #EMPIRE STATE We’ll be posting John Riordan’s weekly “View from New York” column shortly.

Just in case you missed it, here’s last week’s piece on Barry Bonds’ testicles. I kid you not.

6. #FUNNY OL’ GAME We posted this piece yesterday, but it’s worth another look whether you’ve seen it or not.

Dorchester player-manager Ashley Vickers was sent off for “violent conduct” on Monday night after wrestling a streaker to the ground.

A bit harsh, no?
