The sporting social network: Facebook to launch football experiment

The site, which has a potential audience of 700 million, is set to show its first-ever football game.

IT HAS BEEN announced that Facebook will show its first-ever football game after Budweiser agreed to fund a 90-minute stream, and the historic match in question is… the preliminary round 1 FA Cup tie between Ascot United and Wembley FC.

The potential audience for the game is 700 million, however the overall viewing figures are ultimately likely to amount to a mere fraction of that number.

A spokesman for Budweiser, who are also sponsoring the FA Cup, said:

“Budweiser is committed to bringing the world’s most prestigious knockout competition closer to the fans. What better way to demonstrate this than by broadcasting the very first kick to a global audience via Facebook?”

The first round preliminary matches are due to take place on 19 and 20 August, with a total of 763 clubs taking part in the competition this year.

Wembley FC would need to win 14 ties in all, if they were to claim the trophy that Man City won last year.
