Thierry Henry reserves high praise for 'man-of-the-match' Shane Long

The Ireland striker earned plenty of plaudits for his performance this afternoon.

IT’S BEEN A good day for Ireland international Shane Long.

The Tipperary native scored the opening goal and put in an influential display as Southampton deservedly beat a lacklustre Man City 4-2 at St Mary’s this afternoon.

Long now has four goals in his last five games, and it’s the first time the Southampton star has reached double figures in the Premier League, taking his tally to 10 for the season and 13 in all competitions.

The Ireland striker consequently earned plenty of plaudits for his performance, with Sky Sports co-commentator Niall Quinn giving him an “honourable mention,” despite naming Sadio Mane as the official man-of-the-match, while pundit Thierry Henry said Long was the standout performer on the field today.

While criticising Man City’s display, Henry was keen to praise Southampton in general and the Ireland forward in particular.

“For me, the man-of-the-match was Shane Long,” he said.

“I know he didn’t score the hat-trick, I know he wasn’t involved in a lot of the stuff, but with some of his runs, he got them going in every way… He was outstanding.”

Henry also added that City allowed Long, Sadio Mane and Dusan Tadic to “look like Messi, Suarez and Neymar today”.
