1. #TRAGEDY: The HSE has refuted newspaper reports that the ambulance dispatched to help James Casey Butler in Midleton, county Cork on Saturday evening was delayed by up to 45 minutes. In a statement this afternoon, the National Ambulance Service Control Centre confirmed the crew arrived on scene at 6.59pm, 19 minutes after the alarm was raised. The agency expressed its deepest sympathies to the seven-year-old’s family “on their tragic loss”.
2. #DOWNWARDLY MOBILE: Retail groups have welcomed today’s High Court ruling which has ordered a Grafton Street landlord to drop its rent to fall in line with the currently-depressed market rate. The judge said the rent payable by Bewley’s Oriental Café to Ickendel Limited should be allowed to decrease. The landmark judgement will have far-reaching implications for upward-only rent reviews across the country.
3. #THREESOMES: The HSE has asked SputOut.ie to “consider the tone and appropriateness” of an article about “threesomes” on its site which has caused controversy over the past 48 hours. Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin described the advice as “far from healthy” but Young Fine Gael has “fully endorsed” the work of the youth agency.
4. #DEBT CRISIS: Some more bad news for Ireland’s hopes for a deal on banking debt from Europe today as Jeroen Dijsselbloem (the head of the group of eurozone finance ministers) suggested that the unprecedented bailout model used in Cyprus – where account holders in troubled banks could be asked to pay the price for the bank’s salvation – could now be used in other countries.
5. #NICE SUM: A 17-year-old entrepreneur from London has just signed an agreement with Yahoo! which will earn him close to $30 million in cash. The Internet giant announced today that it is to acquire Nick D’Aloisio’s new-gathering app Summly.
