'It was absolutely ludicrous that the Garth Brooks fiasco was allowed to happen'

Fianna Fáil’s biggest Garth Brooks fan* reflects on the saga that convulsed a nation.

TIMMY DOOLEY HAS no regrets about campaigning so strongly to bring the Garth Brook concerts to Ireland last summer despite some believing it all got out of hand.

The Fianna Fáil TD (and tourism spokesperson) tried to bring in legislation to change the planning laws so that Dublin City Council could give the go ahead for all five of the country singer’s gigs at Croke Park last year.

You may remember that the entire nation was convulsed by the saga that dominated the news for several weeks and even involved the intervention of the Taoiseach.

In the end all five gigs were cancelled much to the disappointment of Dooley.

Reflecting on it all this week in an interview with TheJournal.ie, the Clare TD admitted he got a “bit of a slagging about it” but insisted it was important.

“His genre of music might not have even everybody’s cup of tea. So be it. It sold out five concerts, it was an injection of positivity into the capital city at a time when they certainly needed it.”

Watch what Dooley had to say about all that and the element of snobbery among some politicians about the singer:
