The key questions from today’s Premier League fixtures:
Arsenal v Fulham
- Can Robin van Persie keep scoring? According to gambler’s logic, he’s due a blank. But then another goal would only prolong the perception that he’s truly entering the status of “super-forward”. At present, his run is up there with Henry 2002-06, Cristiano Ronaldo 2006- and Leo Messi 2008-
Chelsea v Wolves
- Can Chelsea claim a win? To be fair, their problem has not really been against lower teams where their defence isn’t actually troubled enough. But, given the context of the last week, there is a danger that anxiety will undo some of the attacking integration that Villas-Boas has already managed.
Manchester United v Newcastle
- after another mid-week disappointment, can a returning Rooney rouse United? They’re going to particularly need a touch moe craft today against a cohesive, tight Newcastle team
- or, after enduring their first defeat of the season at City last week, will Newcastle begin to cave? Or has Alan Pardew constructed something longer lasting.
Norwich v QPR
- who’ll blink first in the battle of the promoted teams? Both have impressed so far this season.
- can Steve Morison score for the fourth Premier League game in a row?
- can Heidar Helguson keep up his high-flying form? Since October, only Robin van Persie has scored more.
Sunderland v Wigan
- will this prove a watershed for Steve Bruce? His team have only one twice at home in 2011 but should really be expected to defeat Wigan.
- in saying that, like Blackburn, Wigan’s results often haven’t reflected their performances. Roberto Martinez said this week “we feel we are owed some points”. Can they get them against a team there for the taking?
West Brom v Tottenham
- how much lesser of a team will Spurs be without Modric and Van der Vaart, who are missing today?
- can West Brom recover the rigidity that marked their early season?
