Trapattoni bullish ahead of qualifiers despite player concerns

There are a number of injury worries ahead of the encounters with Armenia and Andorra.

IRELAND MANAGER GIOVANNI Trapattoni has emphasised that the result rather than the performance is key for the team’s upcoming qualifiers against Andorra and Armenia.

Ireland travel to Andorra this Friday, before hosting Armenia the following Tuesday, knowing that two victories would guarantee them a playoff place at the very least.

While two wins would be seen as vital to Ireland’s qualifying hopes, there are also other ramifications that may enable them to qualify should they fail to win either game.

Speaking ahead of the games, he told reporters:

“After 90 minutes, the ball stays and the show is over. The result stays. We look only for the result. We have to pay attention to every mistake, every silly mistake.”

Trapattoni also indicated Kevin Doyle was likely to start the game, having watched the player during Wolves’ 2-1 loss to Newcastle at the weekend. He said:

“One month ago, he was not strong, but he looks well. He said to me, ‘Now I am fit and well’.”

The manager also dismissed concerns about the lack of first-team opportunities being afforded to players such as Sean St Ledger, saying he has never used the problem as an excuse.

The manager is facing a number of injury worries too.

Kevin Kilbane has already been ruled out, while defender Paul McShane is unlikely to travel, having only just returned to action for Hull reserves, following a longstanding calf problem.

John O’Shea and Jonathan Walters are also doubtful, having picked up injuries while playing for their clubs at the weekend.

O’Shea’s injury is of particular concern to Trapattoni, as the Italian manger indicated he would fill in for the suspended Richard Dunne, provided he is fit.

Aiden McGeady is due to meet up with the squad this evening, following his exploits with Spartak Moscow at the weekend.
