THE AMOUNT OF money left by people in their wills to charity Trócaire last year almost doubled on the previous year.
Trócaire’s annual report showed that for the year ending February 2013, some €4.16 million was left to the charity, compared to €2.39 the year before.
The charity’s total income was down 10 per cent over the year and the report said said it “continues to be impacted by the difficult economic climate in Ireland and abroad”.
Most of its funding – some €18.5 million – came from Irish Aid with €15.7 million of that amount for development programmes.
Donations from the public totaled €25 million last year, excluding income raised from emergency responses, which was a 4 per cent increase. Dublin schools also raised €454,000 to the charity through its Lenten Campaign.
Over 90 per cent of spending was direct charitable expenditure with just 7 per cent spent on generating funds.
