U2 play as friends, family and fans say goodbye to Tony Fenton

The DJ had made the arrangements for his funeral.

TONY FENTON WAS laid to rest in Dublin this afternoon with hundreds gathering for his funeral in Donnybrook.

He passed away on Thursday aged just 53 after a battle with cancer.

His Today FM microphone, a cookbook and a letter from Jose Mourinho were just some of the gifts brought to the altar.

The DJ had arranged the funeral, including the music, and performers included the Dublin Gospel Choir, Paul Harrington and even U2.

It was the first time the band had played together since Bono’s bicycle crash in New York last November.

Mario Rosenstock said the DJ will be sorely missed, “I know Tony would have been absolutely chuffed and proud to see everybody here today.

“I don’t think anybody else in the world could have organised the biggest band on the planet to play for their funeral.

Only Tony Fenton could organise his funeral the day before the national public holiday. We can never duplicate The Dude.

Chief Celebrant Father Brendan Kealy was a friend of Tony’s and told the mass, “None of us ever heard Tony complain. He honestly accepted his illness.

This was what God had wished for him. In his last days, he truly renewed his faith.

The DJ was laid to rest at Glasnevin cemetery.

This afternoon radio stations across the country simultaneously paid tribute to the late DJ by playing I Say A Little Prayer by Aretha Franklin- one of his favorite songs.
