Douglas sees red, but UCD hold on for stalemate at home to Bray

Wanderers were denied all three points by an offside flag late on.

Bray Wanderers 0

A LATE red card for UCD’s Hughie Douglas was the major talking point as UCD and Bray Wanderers played out a dour 0-0 draw in the UCD Bowl tonight.

Last time these two sides met UCD ran out 5-3 winners but there would be no such repeat with both sides eager not to concede rather than attack.

Both sides lost the last time out so the respective managers were eager to get back on track but judging on the performances they were perhaps a little too conservative. Wanderers in particular were reluctant to push forward in case of getting caught on the counter attack, with the 5-3 loss evident in the mind of Bray manager Alan Matthews.

A rare first chance fell the way of Bray Wanderers with David Cassidy failing to meet Jamie McGlynn’s cross on the 34th minute.

It took the home side a little longer to carve out a chance, early in the second half, with Hughie Douglas meeting a free kick but he could only direct his header at Stephen McGuinness in the Bray goal.

Bray, on a mission to wear down the opposition, opened up what had been a sturdy UCD defence with a clever ball from David Cassidy finding Ciaran Byrne in the six yard box who struck home but he was deemed to be offside, summing up both sides lack of killer instinct up front.
