Red Alert

Ukraine's former president is now on Interpol's most wanted list

The former president is believed to be living in Russia.

INTERPOL ISSUED A global wanted “red notice” for former Ukraine president Viktor Yanukovych today.

Yanukovych, 64, is wanted for misappropriation of funds and embezzlement in Ukraine, which he fled in February after a pro-Western revolution toppled his regime.

Wanted

The former president has been living in Russia. He and members of his family are accused of accumulating vast fortunes during his time in office.

One of Yanukovych’s sons, Oleksandr, managed to build a fortune from coal estimated at €420 million despite being a dentist by profession.

Authorities in Kyiv say his appearance on Interpol’s empowers any police force to hand him over to Ukraine if he is detained.

Ukraine’s Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said on 12 January that former Prime Minister Mykola Azarov and the former president’s son, Oleksandr Yanukovych, also have been added to the Interpol list along with several other former top officials of Yanukovych’s government.
