KILDARE WENT TOP of the Division 3 football league table with a 1-12 to 1-8 win over Offaly this afternoon in Newbridge.
After last year’s shock relegation, Kildare have begun life in the third tier impressively as they followed up last week’s opening success over Westmeath.
Cian O’Neill’s side were ahead 0-8 to 0-4 at the break with Niall Kelly their scoring star before Cathal McNally pounced for their only goal of the game after half-time.
Offaly struck a late consolation goal courtesy of Peter Cunningham but the Lilywhites held on.
Sligo claimed their first success by 1-11 to 1-10 at Markievicz Park against Westmeath. It was 0-8 to 1-4 in favour of Sligo at half-time with Ger Egan netting for Westmeath.
A goal from Kyle Cawley in the second-half proved crucial in propelling Sligo to victory.
Meanwhile Longford launched a comeback to see off Limerick by 0-13 to 1-8 at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park.
It was 0-5 apiece at the break before Limerick moved 1-8 to 0-6 clear with Tom Lee striking their goal. But that was not the launchpad for a Limerick victory as Longford hit the last seven points of the game.
Division 4
Antrim, Louth and Wicklow stay unbeaten in the basement division after they won their second successive clash in today’s Round 2 games.
Antrim were 1-8 to 0-7 victors over Wexford in Corrigan Park in Belfast with Matthew Fitzpatrick notching their goal.
Louth were grateful to late points from Ryan Burns before they defeated Waterford by 1-10 to 1-9 in Dungarvan. Derek Maguire struck Louth’s goal as Gavin Crotty netted for Waterford.
Finally Wicklow held on to see off Leitrim by 0-10 to 1-6 in Carrick-on-Shannon despite a late goal by Emlyn Mulligan from the penalty spot for the Connacht side.
