Irish universities fail to make Top 100 list

Neither made the Top 100 but who came out on top between TCD and UCD?

IRELAND’S UNIVERSITIES HAVE failed to break back into the Top 100 of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

It wasn’t all bad news for Trinity College Dublin as the school managed to climb seven places to 110, an improvement on last year’s result.

However, University College Dublin (UCD) did not fare as well as its position dropped considerably from 159th to 187th with a score of less than 48. The colleges are rated across a number of core categories, including teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

University College Cork and NUI Galway were much further down the list, being placed in the 301 to 350 category. NUI Maynooth was in the next grouping down, while DCU and University of Limerick failed to make the Top 400.

The placings will come as a disappointment for many schools which were previously seen among the most prestigious in the world. Trinity had held onto 76th position in 2010 and had previously been regarded as one of the Top 50 universities by the system.

On top again this year, with a score of 95.5, is California Institute of Technology in the US, beating out Oxford and Stanford which share second place. Oxford jumped two spots to push Harvard back to fourth position.

The US continues to dominate the rankings, claiming 76 of the Top 200 placings, while Asian universities, especially in the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and China, performed well.
