VIDEO: Mayo star O'Connor gearing up for Connacht decider

He was crowned the best young footballer in the country in 2011 but Cillian O’Connor is demanding better performances in a Mayo shirt this season.

HE BURST ONTO the scene in sparkling fashion last year and now Mayo attacker Cillian O’Connor is seeking to build on that debut season ahead of Sunday’s provincial football final against Sligo in Dr Hyde Park.

A member of the minor side that reached the 2010 All-Ireland semi-final, O’Connor made the step up to the senior grade in 2011 and produced a series of excellent performances. He fired over 0-8 against Roscommon in their Connacht final win before striking 0-6 when Mayo dumped the then reigning All-Ireland champions Cork out of the championship at the All-Ireland quarter-final juncture in Croke Park.

Their season may have ended in defeat in the All-Ireland semi-final against Kerry but O’Connor’s consistent performances were rewarded with an Allstar award and the Young Footballer of the Year accolade. He also claimed his second successive Mayo senior football title with his club Ballintubber last autumn and is now hungry for more after striking 0-6 against Leitrim in last month’s Connacht semi-final.

Here’s his thoughts on next Sunday’s tie when he spoke to TV3.

You can hear more from O’Connor on The GAA Show on TV3 this Friday evening.
